The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking was created by the University of Indonesia (UI) in 2010 to measure universities’ efforts to make their campuses more sustainable. In the first year, 95 universities from 35 countries participated in the evaluation. That number increased to 516 in 2016; 619 in 2017; and 719 in 2018.
Prepared annually, the ranking ranks the institutions that develop best practices and sustainable programs on their campuses, considering six indicators: green areas, energy consumption, waste management, water treatment, mobility and environmental education. The ranking is made up of 780 institutions from 85 countries.
